Halloween in NYC

My word these guys don't do things in half measures!

Halloween is huge in this City people go out of there way to out do each other

This is done in numerous ways

  1. Spook up your house/apartment this involves covering your staircases in straw/Corn sheaves / Pumpkins odd shaped vegetables / ghosts and gremlins etc. On some streets its all about keeping up with the Joneses (if there is such a phrase over here!)
  2. Waiting in a line (Queue for our English readers!) of people that goes round the block for 1hour to buy a fancy dress costume. BTW I highly recommend going to see Halloween Adventure store (Link) it was amazing inside
  3. Wearing ridiculous clothing
  4. Going clubbing in said clothing
  5. Or better still joining the Halloween parade! (Link)

Heres a the best couple of photographs I could take (All the rest where rubbish) while I was at the parade it should give you an impression of just how many people line the streets

You would believe it but it took our rable 45 minutes to reach this corner of 14th street and 7th Avenue and thats was only from Union Square only two blocks away!

To speed the process in the melay we decided to play the age old trick of calling a mate that doesnt exist (In front of you) and then barging through to meet him (Even though he doesn't exist) Jules and I found it most effective, in fact we almost made it to the front!!

Cool storm Trooper not sure that hes very Halloweeney

And finally the point you've been waiting for yes Ed and I in fancy dress ready for a night out at a house party in the upper West side (Very Posh!!)

Noboby reads the last few lines but if you do........

Why not place a comment what do you think of my costume?

Why am I so busy?

200 Chambers Street

You know after all my visitors I have gotten a little behind in work

I have completed over 240hours of work!! Which explains why haven't come up for air over the past 5 weeks

I made smashed my own personal record the other day with 90hours work in the week after Madoka had left for England its been insane!

Thankfully looks like things are finally settling down (As far as I can see!)

I have accustomed to my new boss and feeling a lot happier with myself and work

The Fruits of my labour

  1. Massive Tree lined plaza with water fall on the axis of the entrance Lobby
  2. One roof top garden on the 30th floor
  3. Two Swimming pools (One directly under the plaza with a huge pyramid skylight the other on the 7th floor!!)
  4. Two private terrace on the eighth floor (North and South Wing)
  5. Two levels of underground carparking connected to streetlevel by massive spiral ramp!
  6. Two Gymnasiums
  7. A complete School 4 levels but the same
  8. 8 stairs
  9. 5 elevators (lifts to those in England)
  10. Vast amounts of 1st floor retail space
Oh and by the way prices start at a ½ million dollars

So Chris can have two as long as he buys me the penthouse on the 29th floor... ... Its only 7Million prices still to be confirmed!

its a great building it even has its own Web site! Check it out

The question is whats in the package?

Only you can find out by comming to see me

I'll give you a clue... Second thoughs Nah I won't

Sarah

See you soon and sorry about no card this birthday (In fact isn't this the first birthday we've had appart?)

Street Art and my attempt to notice it

Lets start with a bit of history that will allow you to apprieciate the cartoon below

In the beginning Manhattan Began it's life on the southern most tip (now known as Downtown) the growth was sporadic and random creating a series of spider like road systems eminating from the tip only a few roads cart track's existed like the broadway and the tracks along either side of the island

As the City grew it was clear that the development needed a new direction. Hence City Planners in all their wisdom decided to create a grid system and split the island into "Blocks" formed by a series roads known as Avenues (Up down) and Streets (across) with the odd exception (Diagonal roads like Broadway)

THE PUNCHLINE

This regular road system created almost entirely of right angles in my eyes created "The City of Cross Roads" so much for the "Big Apple"

all these cross roads lead to repetition so much so that on ever corner you can expect to see three things almost without question they are

1. The legendry Trash can or "bin" to us Brits
2. A Bus stop or Parking meter
3. A post box or newspaper box

Such repetion has leads to a lack of Character

However with time this lack of Character is lost and replaced by......

This is my example....

...when I saw this on the street, it made me smile.

Volunteer work in my local park

As promised here are a few pictures to prove I actually did do the work

Above: a very tired Andrew after a 6 hours of shovelling soil and mulsh and wheel barrowing it all around the park

Above: The fruits of our labour including the inaugural drink in guess what a British Pub in the (East) village!! I had a pint of Young's..... ....I hadn't had a proper English pint in over 5 months and it taste like the tears of angels! other word fantastic!

(So that one less reason for returning to England) only kidding I will see you all sooner than you think!!

Spring arrives in the East Village

True Happiness makes itself known in so many ways but not as often as it can in NYC (or so it seems)

a few Sundays ago I took a long stroll around the East Village (My neighbourhood) the sun was shining people where playing ball, keepee uppee, Badmington, frisbe and believe it or not! body beautifuls where showing off in there bikinis!! whist sun bathing. You could go as far as to say it was as a

HEEAT WAVE!

I would go as far as to say the first day of spring had arrived in the now very crowded Tompkin Square Park.

I could knew it was a small sample of things to come!

TOMPKIN SQUARE PARK

The Park is about two blocks Square. The Park itself is split into zones come take a stroll with me I'll show you around.... ...imagine

Old men where playing chess (when they where not admiring the bikini girls playing volley ball).
Kids selling lemonade and cookies from a make shift stall

A market set up on Avenue A selling home grown / farm produce

A group of local musicians strumming gitars, double base, Sax, trumpets, volins etc A kind of eclectic mix of street performers all playing Jazz and improvising amoungst themselves. There may have been a hint of mexican inspiration in there at some points too!

People where playing with there dogs in the dog run

………I was care free soaking in the vibrance

One of lifes perfect days

Not to mention the volunteers all gardening, planting out beds and cutting back overgrowth (I asked one of them if they needed any extra help next weekend Boy was that a mistake)

Well that weekend has just been and gone. I can still feel every muscle aching but understand that I have contributed to the immense sense of comunity that exists here and I feel better for the exercise

I will post some pictures next week of my endeavours.

Other words just dont do her justice ( Jason if you can read this keep it to yourself! see the end of blog) I hope the My dictionarys right! Or I may not have a girlfriend after she reads this!

まどか

xYx

We had such a great time in NYC we took a romantic trip around central park in a horse drawn chariot thingy, we chilled in Central Park sunbathing on the granite stone outcrop and chased after the squirels Not to mention the cafes and a long walk to Brooklyn hiehgts over the famous Brooklyn Suspension Bridge. where we saw a Mercedes photo shoot on the pier overlooking Manhattan (I will post picture in this Blog when I sort out the problem) It was breath taking and a real clear day for sight seeing I may write about it some time

Not the Bikini one dont worry Madoka! "Not that that photograph exists anyway!" (Still friends?)

We ate in Expensive restaurants (And cheap ones!) introduced her to my friends (Including Grace) Boy was that a mistake too Oriental girls competing for my attension. Ofcourse Madoka Won!

We did shopping and other things that are of no real interest to you back home you know washing the dishes, doing grocery shopping and cleaning the apartment (Yeh right!)....

........Oh I forgot we also pecked each other on the cheeks a couple of times

(Which cheeks.... ....I leave up to you!)

Acconting has never been my strongest subject (you can ask Chris about that he's training to be an accounting Excutive you know!). The monday after Madoka left I had a look at my checking account (Current acount to those in England) You would never guess how much I had left after both Hugh and Madoka had drained my cash (Thank you both for returning the money)

GO ON GUESS...

A. $2000 + (that's about £1075+ (for you guys back home)

B. $1000 - $1999

C. $500 - $999

D. $4.30¢

Place your bets please!.......

............If you chose A. Nah I wish, do you think Im made of money B. Getting warmer C. Almost there!! D. We have a winner!!

You could have guessed couldn't you! It turns out the only winners are English

My mate Hugh who now owns a very sexy Digital camera (Better than Chris's even! newer model sorry mate!) My sister who now has the perfect gift for her beloved "God bless America's exchange rate" ...

...and last but not least my English Bank Manager "Hi by the way do you miss me? or my dept?"

Love アンドリュー (Andy)

PS I apologise to the Non-Japanese speaking friends but you can get extra points for those who can creativly translate the words to describe Madoka (Be nice or I may never speak to you again!) Im off to celebrate Jasons Birthday party At "Pieces" the Gay Karaoke Bar in Greenwich Village.

See you there! (PS Im scared by that place)

My trip to Liberty Island

I figured you folk back home in Brit land may be more amenable to tourist pics than pictures of the buildings I design (Although come to mention it have I told you about my new projects?)

Don't panic I'm not going to start!

Ah to be a tourist again

Just as I started to feel like a proper New Yorker Hugh decided it would be a good idea to visit Liberty and Ellis Island. Ive heard bad things regarding this tourist attraction but was willing to have an open mind on the matter. I was really presently surprised when we eventually got there. Mind you we did have to wait in long queues for tickets then for the boat then for the museum then for the toilet then for souvenirs etc you get the picture.

Waiting in the queue we where bombarded by Street performers it started with

  • Spanish/Mexican outcast Opera singer He was OLD but still in tune so I gave him a couple of bucks (I thought it may shut him up [only kidding if your listening up there])
  • The next guy was a Comedy singer with a banjo and a rainbow coloured wig! He was making fun of the crowd and took great pleasure in taking the Mickey out of us Brits
  • The Last guy (At this point I was out of cash) was an Cool Rastafarian with a steel drum lets just say he made Britney Spears "Hit me baby one more time" sound good!! (Not that I have anything against Britney of course)

Now if that isn't a miracle I don’t know what is!
As we stood at the gate waiting to hop on the Queen of New York....Its a Boat honest! nothing to do with Jason (Gay, Single and available by the way!) promise!

We had to endure security searches, metal detectors, armed guards with big dogs and retinal scans (only kidding). It was so funny when Hugh got told off by on of the guards for loitering!! Shame on you!

BUT THERE WAS SOMETHING FUNDAMENTALLY WRONG!

I didn't get it......This process was so we could sail to "LIBERTY" Island, but it seamed the one thing we wern't guaranteed was our Freedom or Liberty!

Oh well.

Above: This is a montage of views from and around Liberty Island.

It turned out to be all worth the wait we took loads of pictures. It was a Beautiful Sunny New York Day almost perfect! and a real high note to finish Hughs "Writing Holiday" (more like an excuse to go out and not write if you ask me!)

Ive been receiving loads of E-mails today and feeling a hell of a lot better Looks like Blogging is the way forward. Thank you (You know who you are!) and keep those comments flowing

Has anyone seen Hugh he still hasn't called (Damb it just drop me a E-mail....dont even start on the it was jet lag excuse, talk to the hand cos the face ain't listening!)

Sorry came over all American then, i'll have to watch that in future....My bad!

(Whatever that means??@#!*)

Little Britain

Hello out there!

Its Tuesday afternoon and Hugh is safely back in England...

...Well at least I hope he is (He didn't even call to say he made it back...YES HUGH if you made it back do call!!! Hint. Hint.)

I'm feeling a bit down because I miss him (Ok its not just him its an English thing). But it's OK because I've got friends here to look after me and writing this blog helps to get rid of my home sickness. It clear from my mood now that Hugh reminded me of how important you lot back in GB are to me and how lucky I am to have proper friends who give a damb!...

...and you know just because I'm not around it doesn't mean I'm not thinking about you!

PS This is an excuse for you to E-mail me OK! How are things going over there

ANYWAY enough of that stuff (I'm not meant to talk like that)

Just looking back over the last three weeks there has been a lot going on in my life far too much to even begin to tell you. That's partly why the posts on my blog site have suffered.

Fear not! I am back and considerably more sober!

As you might have guessed Hughs arrival into NY and the combination of our two personalities has lead to some very strange and exciting things happening.

I will try to cover most of them but I fear I will fail miserably.

Let me start with an important discovery, We where walking back from B&H (Very cool Jewish ran Camera shop). Hugh and I where talking about the shop we decided it was like being in Willy Wonkers Chocolate factory (I know Im going off at a tangent but keep with it OK).

YOU MAY WANT TO SKIP THIS IM RAMBLING A BIT

(SEE "WELCOME BACK" BELOW)

This place is awesome hi-tec state of the art shop with low camera prices. Lets start with the over complicated conveyor system. You wouldn't believe it! You talk to a sales assistant at any of the counters as say what you're interested in and a few seconds later it shoots of the conveyor from a back of store warehouse! Then when you finished gawping at the speed of service you make the purchase. he puts it back onto the conveyor and off it goes.... on the way its packed and labels ready for the pickup point you go and pay then pick up the camera it was soo slick (No wonder they sell soo cheap no thief could steal anything [unless he diverted the conveyor come to think of it......Nah!]). It was like Mc Donalds had been in to design the store heres there Web Site http://www.bhphotovideo.com/ If you want anything let me know I do mail order (Only as gifts mind you on a non profit basis so as not to break any laws and all)

WELCOME BACK

...We where walking back from B&H (Very cool Jewish ran Camera shop see above). When we stumbled across a small but perfectly formed shop

We both took a double take and said:

"No it can't be........Its an English shop in New Yoooork" (get it!!?)"

Just look at all those English Goodies! For My American friends benefit I will itemise them!

Top Shelf: MMMhh Robinsons Orange Cordial and you guessed it Ribena!!!! Im so happy!
3rd Shelf from top: Look at all those English Biscuits NO Oreo's here mate!! We got hob nobs, Jaffa Cakes and Nice Biscuits!
Middle of the counter: Look Malteeesers! and in the back ground Smarties

Oh I think Im in Heaven!

Well I couldn't help myself I just Bought everything!! (Apart from the sales assistant) He was from Liverpool (like my dad, but you just don't know where they have been!)

And they gave me some free Kit Kats these Guy's are truly British!

Take a look at this stuff below:

extra points for the Americans who can Guess what the items on the top right hand side are!

Any one for tea?

Well Im off to Little Britain (My nick name really its called Tea and Sympathy) See you all there!

Take a sneak Peek Dare's You!

Hugh did I mention....................How much

.............Nah forget it. It doesn't matter.

A series of fortunate circumstances

Hugh and I went to Central park this Saturday (Yes or first weekend "Together") and decided to make some new friends, we started with imaginary friends, but that didn't work. So we quickily decided that a snowman was the answer (See below).

It was a race to see who could make the biggest Snowman body part (No mister weird guy in central park not that bit!#@!?!*) In the end we decided that my snow ball deserved to be the body (It would have looked a bit funny the other way around).

So that means I WIN!! not that im competitive?!

As we lifted the head into its final resting place. things started to happen little did we know but this was the start of a very RANDOM weekend.

People stopped to take pictures, kids tried to drag their parents over and pointed excited to see the strange behavior of these two adults (did I mention hughs a bit of a "Nutter" perhaps they where looking at him.)

Eventually we got a task force of kids to find chest nuts for eyes and twigs for his nose and arms

OUR MASTERPIECE WAS COMPLETE.........at this point I was cold and needed a Beer and what do you know a group of guys and gals arrive to hamper our needs (See below)...... Three pints of Guinness and the rest of the weekend was a blur. But thats another story (Maybe later!)

Random cast Above in order of appearance:

Hugh, Maia(I directed and stared in Little shop of horrors don't you know), Jason ("can I have your pants"),Stacia ("The Lloyd" not present), Shauna (Hugh says "Hi"), and Me (I must admit looking as handsome as ever "Chavtastic")

My Word .... I almost forgot Frank the Snowman

I Would tell you about the sunday roast I cooked for the above + others and Hughs antics but some things are best kept between friends Eh Hugh (if you know what I mean.........Nudge nudge wink wink)

All the overtime money I am saving for my furniture and believe me have I got plans!

Im very excited at the moment because I have managed to convince my friend Hugh that he should come stay with me in New York. We have been talking for some time about his visit and I must admit I expected him to say he would travel over after Madoka in March.

For those of you who dont know Hugh I will explain he is a close friend from my University days in Manchester He is a bit of a nutter (so we both get on like a house on fire) and whenever I visit Manchester we alway hang out. But you may wonder how the hell he managed to get time off work... Well its simple he jacked in his Job (and no not for me although that would have been very flattering) He wants to become a writer!!!

My Current (Sexy) Engineering Project

Copyright SOM architects

This is a rendered view of the Sky Scraper I am currently designing at WSP Cantor Seinuk.(Preliminary stage).

Its nice to see that they have started me on a "Small" project??!!

Believe me with the main structure standing at 31stories this is in NY terms a relatively small building...... Yet in Britain this would be HUGE!

My Boss is Yefim Gurevich, he moved to NY over 20Years ago from what is now known as Russia. He's been very supportive during my first few weeks and considering he has soo may jobs on the go he has still made time for me. Yefim Reminds me of my Russian Advanced mathematics lecturer at University, he too was also incredibly intelligent so I expect to learn a lot from Yefim.

In fact I would go as far to say that WSP Cantor Seinuk (To find out more click on the link) has a some of the finest minds in the industry (Present company excluded of course!) I bet the average Office IQ dropped when I arrived (Yeh right!)

I feel lucky, I have been given pretty much full design freedom including client (Architect) liason with great results (even though I do say so myself). I have been providing loads of solutions lately and I think there really pleased with my performance soo far. Lets Hope I it stays that way.

Oh and By the way the, did I mention the Architects on this Job are massive! they are know as SOM or Skidmore Owings and Merril (to check out the web link just click on the underlined name)

SOM are responsible for the architecture behind the WSP Cantor Seinuk design for WTC 1 (Freedom Tower) and quess what! the main office is based in New York on Wall street opposite the Stock Exchange of all places!

However I do have my eyes set on another tower..... you may have heard about it.

I will post it next If your interested.

Ahh the Freedom Tower Look at this beauty you wouldn't believe how important this project is to ME. Posted by Hello

My final destination...

Times Square Posted by Hello

On the way Posted by Hello

Blizzards and the Quest for the Snow Blower.

This is a picture of me in Central Park on an icy Saturday in the snow. I decided to go out in the middle of a blizzard warning (Life on the edge me!) believe me its was Soo dawn cold I couldn't feel anything.... and I mean anything! Posted by Hello

I dont suppose you ever watched Short Circuit? Well if you did this will make sense... I recall Johnny #5 saying: -
"Yo Mama's was a Snow Blower!".
At the time I was young and unsuspecting and didn't know what the hell it meant, but thought nothing of it. But Halleluiah I understand and its only taken me 15 years of ignorance!

I was walking down Broadway from Columbus Circle when I was almost taken out by some psycho on a strange wheeled contraption about the size of a golf buggy (but a lot NOISIER!)
it had rotating blades behind a giant scoop at the front and it was chewing up snow and spitting it out like no tomorrow! I dodged the blades and the chained tires only to get a "Sorry mate didn't see ya" and a mouth full of snow from the blower. I decided I should be a bit more careful in future but could have been certain he was aiming for me!

Almost at Times Square I came across another team of guys with there infernal machines these guys meant business! they had various bolt on attachment to their machines I thought I was in a mad max movie!

This goes to prove Americans are crazy (But in a nice way) I bet the Janitors and Supers love dusing of there machines and playing in the snow I mean who wouldn't?

Ok perhaps Im alone on this one

Well that was a kind of Historic Blog (which means Web Log) for two reasons
  • firstly it happen about two weeks ago (Most of the snows gone now!)
  • Secondly i have managed to embed a picture into the page! Hope you can all see it

Ace Eh?

I hope to hear from soon and get ready for more cool stuff on my blogspot!

Im back in New York....kepish!

Well its been some time since my last E mail to all you folks back home, but I've finally managed to make some free time (Not much mind you) I have to go back to my NEW Apartment for 9.30pm and I suppose if your being pedantic this is not strictly an E-mail

Well where to start Ive got so much to say I hope your ready it may take some time

Lets start with Thank you's (I know its weird but they deserve it)

A BIG THANK YOU to: -
